THE CHALLENGE

The Municipality manages a portfolio of small public buildings spread across a largely rural landscape of villages and hamlets. Without data, every HVAC issue required a physical site visit, even for simple tasks like seasonal temperature adjustments. The Municipality needed remote visibility and control, but full Building Automation Systems weren't a viable option given the cost and complexity involved.

Straightforward Installation, Even in Remote Locations

Cognition was installed by the Municipality's local HVAC partner. Cellular connectivity worked out of the box across all sites, including more remote locations — providing reliable data transmission without any networking infrastructure investment.

From Reactive to Proactive

Before Cognition, issues in public buildings only came to light when they were already emergencies — when spaces were too cold to use, or equipment had failed entirely. Cognition alerts gave the Municipality early warning, enabling action before residents were affected.

Cognition Dashboard access is now shared with the Municipality's local HVAC partners, who can remotely review data, triage issues, and advise on whether a site visit is warranted — reducing unnecessary truck rolls and improving response times.

In Action: Community Hall Heating Failure

On a Saturday morning in October, Cognition detected a heating malfunction in the Community Hall auditorium, alerting the Facility Director and HVAC technician simultaneously.

The team reviewed dashboard data remotely, confirmed a site visit was needed, and dispatched a technician who found and fixed a faulty gas line connection. Data confirmed the issue was resolved, and the building was cleared for its scheduled reservations without disruption.

One Platform for the Whole Portfolio

Cognition's built-in information management tools — equipment notes, configuration history, photos, and utility bill uploads — ensure that every decision-maker, from facilities staff to HVAC partners, has the context they need to act quickly and correctly.

For a small municipality managing a large geographic spread with limited staff, that shared visibility makes the difference between a resolved issue and a failed public event.
